about
“The oppressor does not perceive the words of the oppressed as language, but rather as noise. Even when the words are shared, their connotations are vastly different. Thus, many words carry connotations of pleasure for the oppressor and connotations of suffering for the oppressed.” - Christiane Rochefort, Definition of the Oppressed.
The lyrics of Frozen Eyes were inspired by Christiane Rochefort’s Definition of the Oppressed, which appeared in the preface to the iconic feminist book “Scum Manifesto” by Valerie Solanas, published in 1967. With a sarcastic tone, Steely Eyed Cat, the lyricist, chose to revisit this idea of oppressed language in a romantic relationship by ridiculing a male character who plays the victim and centers this issue on the suffering he feels at not being able to understand the “noise” of the woman he oppresses.
lyrics
My sweet words sound hollow
and clash with your silence
tell me about violence
As my heart goes dry and mellow
I can’t read your mind through your frozen eyes
Since the maze in our voices
Sounds like death in all these places
I can’t see you now I know it’s all lies
Since the maze in our voices
Sounds like death in all these places
Can’t be the patient and the doctor,
Can’t be on both sides of the mirror
You say a thing I hear another
But please don’t think that I don’t bother
You’re falling asleep with the door open,
While I’m tryna get to my shelter
I’m tired of playing tongue twister
Whether I cry or whisper
I’m always talking and talking the same shit
If only you could get it
My words are drained from reality
'Cause love doesn’t mean the same for me
If only you could get it
I can’t read your mind through your frozen eyes
Since the maze in our voices
Sounds like death in all these places
I can’t see you now I know it’s all lies
Since the maze in our voices
Sounds like death in all these places
Can’t be the patient and the doctor, (i never asked you to)
Can’t be on both sides of the mirror (i never asked you to)
You say a thing I hear another (i don’t blame you)
But please don’t think that I don’t bother (i know it’s true)
